Introduction
The New York Subway System (officially called MTA New York City Transit)is operated by the MTA regional transportation network, which also includes MTA Staten Island Railway (part of NYC Transit’s Department of Subways), MTA Long Island Rail Road, MTA Long Island Bus, MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, and MTA Capital Construction.

There is 24-hour bus and subway service throughout the five boroughs.

About 7 million people ride use the subway and or bus system daily. New York's City Transit boasts the largest subway car fleet in the world, and the largest public bus fleet in North America. All buses and trains are air-conditioned.

Fares as of 3/05
The fare for a subway or local bus ride is $2.
The fare for an express bus ride is $5.
If you qualify for Reduced Fare, you can travel for half fare.*
Up to three children 44 inches tall and under ride for free when accompanied by a fare paying adult.

* Requires elderly (65 and older) or persons with disabilities identification.
   To qualify for the Elderly/Disabled fare, passengers must present one of the following:
      Medicare Card
      Reduced fare card issued by the New York City Department for the Aging
      Reduced Fare MetroCard ssued by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

More than 90 percent of trips taken on NYC Transit are made with MetroCard
you can purchase a Metrocard at subway booths, local merchants, MetroCard vans, or vending machines.

To apply for Reduced Fare MetroCard, seniors and persons with disabilities may request an application by writing to New York City Transit (NYCT) Customer Assistance at 370 Jay Street, 7th Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201, or by calling NYCT at (718) 243-4999. Applicants may also sign up in person in the lobby at 370 Jay Street, Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., a photograph will be taken there free of charge.
Customers with hearing impairments may call (718) 596-8273 (TTY).

Bus drivers do not carry change. Please have exact fare ready when boarding.
